I wouldn't ever do it, I would hate myself for ripping the Artists off.

Dude...It isn't ripping it off. It is illigal, but it isn't an inforced law. The record company does get some money from the band selling cds, but the band is okay with it.

Also, what the record company doesn't tell, is that they get money whenever people buy blank cds. When I download the library cd onto Itunes, put it onto my ipod, and make a Cd out of it, The record company still gets money from the blank cd. So, It isn't an inforced law, and LOTS of people do it. But when I buy off of Itunes, that is legal.
(same thing with downloading off of Youtube.)

EDIT: great...I told my mom about it, and she doesn't like me doing it....and she is saying that it's all a lie...but my dad says it's right...so I don't know what to think. (I'm going more for my dad's idea though)

The record companys don't make blank CDs, there are companys that do that, but that aren't the same ones who record\creat\etc the music.
Itunes PAYS the record companys to be able to have people buy the songs from Itunes, so the companys still makes money.
It is still a law, EVEN IF IT IS NOT ENFORCED WE SHOULD STILL FOLLOW IT!
Duh.
I don't like downloading songs off of Youtube, that's why I don't do it either.

Your Mom's right, just do the right thing and buy the CD.

Yeah, the record company does not make bland cds, but they do get money from them whenever some sell. So thats why it is not enforced.

Paul, Um, Maybe were you live, but not in the US it ain't.
You can make some copies for yourself- IF you own the CD.

Elffy, it's still a law, and not to-get-a-Holier-than-Thou-Are-additude, but the Bible says to obey our leaders and the laws that they lay down.
(I can get you where it's found if you need proof.)

And really, your selling your morals for a CD, because it truly IS stealing.

I was asking how legal it is to take a shared music CD and rip it onto your computer and put it on your iPod.

But I would also put it on a cd, therefor, the record company still got money when I bought all those blank cds.

I still don't see how they get money... As Stormy said, the record companies don't make blank CDs. In fact, they prolly have to buy them to make the records with. (Don't hold that to me, though)

There's a differance from normal CD's that the Record Companys use, and the CD-R's that you can buy.
But the point stands- It's Illegal and Moraly wrong.

LOL, I love how Stormy is getting so worked up over the morals of copying songs onto your computer. Elffy, no one's gonna arrest a 13 year old for putting a few CDs he didn't buy onto his ipod. If they were to try to enforce that law, pretty much everyone with an ipod but stormy would be under arrest.

And FLAME, It's fine to copy music to your MP3 player from a CD, as long as you OWN the CD, what Elffy is talking about is getting a CD from the Libary and putting it on his Ipod.

Like my dad says, if you like the artist, and you want to support them so they can keep making music, buy the CD yourself.
Remember, bands don't make nearly as much money as the record companies, so they can use as much as they can get.

That said a lot of great video game soundtracks aren't sold on CD (often because the rest of the game did poorly in markets) so feel totally free to grab those off YouTube. Nobody'll lose money on those.

I never knew people put soundtracks up on Youtube, not that I really listen to any soundtracks anyways, because they are never Heavy Metal .
